Tom Allen’s grave

Tom Allen was the faithful servant of Lord Nelson. Like Nelson, he was born in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk. He died in November 1838 at Greenwich Hospital and his grave is in the grounds of what is now Devonport House hotel.

As a Greenwich Pensioner, it is a rare honour for Allen to have an individual grave. The wreath on the grave in the photo above was placed there by the Nelson Society.

The inscription on the stone marking his burial reads:

TO THE MEMORY
OF
THOMAS ALLEN,
THE FAITHFUL SERVANT
OF
ADMIRAL LORD NELSON
BORN AT
BURNHAM THORPE
IN THE
COUNTY OF NORFOLK
1764,
AND DIED AT
THE ROYAL HOSPITAL
GREENWICH
ON THE
23RD OF NOVEMBER
1838
