Tom Allen’s grave
Tom Allen was the faithful servant of Lord Nelson. Like Nelson, he was born in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk. He died in November 1838 at Greenwich Hospital and his grave is in the grounds of what is now Devonport House hotel.
As a Greenwich Pensioner, it is a rare honour for Allen to have an individual grave. The wreath on the grave in the photo above was placed there by the Nelson Society.
The inscription on the stone marking his burial reads:
TO THE MEMORY
THE FAITHFUL SERVANT
ADMIRAL LORD NELSON
COUNTY OF NORFOLK
AND DIED AT
THE ROYAL HOSPITAL
23RD OF NOVEMBER
